Growing up in the beach resort of Penascola, Florida, meant I heard a lot of music by intoxication advocate and leisure capitalist Jimmy Buffet. I hated all of it. I can’t think of anyone less punk rock, and yet, when he died, my Facebook feed was filled with punk rockers expressing their condolences for his passing.

I saw him live once. When I lived in New York in the ‘00s, Les Paul used to play every Thursday at Iridium, in Times Square. He was in his ‘90s and famous rock stars passing through New York would often sit in with him. That was the draw: what famous guitarist would jam with one of the inventors of the electric guitar?

So my friend Josh and I hopped the F train into Manhattan. Who would show up that night? Jimmy Page? Keith Richards? Jeff Beck?

Nope. Jimmy Fucking Buffet. So I had to sit through this goddamn song, barely redeemed by Les Paul solos.

I still don’t know what I did to deserve such punishment.
